IF YOU’RE A regular visitor to these pages you would have noticed that we are suckers for exquisite photography at the generalist –– and looking at these shots we’re sure you can only but agree that Tobi Wilkinson’s photographs of the Gyuto monks are near the peak of the craft (click on any of these images for a slideshow of the shots).

Entitled Buddha’s Robes, the exhibition is showing in April at the Bondi Pavilion, Bondi Beach, Sydney to coincide with the Tibetan monks’ latest visit to Australia’s biggest city.

The majority of Tobi’s work is shot on film and developed on fibre-based paper in her own darkroom. She was assigned as one of the two official photographers for His Holiness The Dalai Lama’s 2009 tour of Australia.

The Gyuto Monks of Tibet are best known for their intricate sand mandalas and their harmonic chanting. The monks have played the Glastonbury Festival, appeared in a short film with The Rolling Stones, were nominated for a Grammy in 2010 and this year signed to Decca/Universal Music, the world’s largest record label.

This year the monks are also celebrating 20 years of touring Australia promoting the universal values of kindness and compassion. They are led by 76-year-old Gen Lama Thupten Phuntsok, a survivor of the 1959 invasion of his homeland, Tibet.

Buddha’s Robes, The Bondi Pavilion, Bondi, Sydney, Australia will show from April 15 until April 27.
