ROOM 506: THE COPENHAGEN HOTEL ROOM FOR MODERN LOVERS

AT COPENHAGEN’S ICONIC SAS Royal Hotel (or the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel as it’s now known) room 606 has been famously preserved exactly how designer Arne Jacobsen intended it to be when it opened in July 1960. The most famous by-products of the Danish modernist’s hotel design, the Egg and the Swan chairs, went on to become two of the most celebrated (and copied) chairs in modern history.

Another of Jacobsen’s chair designs the Drop chair, was also created exclusively for the hotel and was originally found in the cocktail bar and in every room. Unlike the Swan and the Egg chairs it was never put into commercial production.

This year the Drop chair went into production and became available to the public for the first time. In celebration Fritz Hansen has asked Spanish designer Jamie Hayon to create a new room, 506, where guests can stay and that shares a kinship with the spirit and aesthetics of room 606.

“We asked Jaime Hayon to design a new Room 606 for 2014,” explains Jacob Holm, CEO, Fritz Hansen. “as there are some obvious similarities between him and Arne Jacobsen … they share the same deep-seated passion for organic shapes, exclusive materials, extraordinary craftsmanship and a clear aesthetic expression.”

Hayon shares a love of  Jacobsen’s palette of subtle colours mixed with a few stronger, bolder colour statements. He created a total design for the room including furniture, works of art, bedspreads and lamps.

“I have created bespoke designs just for this room,” says Hayon (pictured above), “always in reflection of our shared principles of working with the best materials and aiming for simplicity and maximum comfort.”

Room 506 at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Copenhagen will be available from next year for 735 euros per night.
